So, you have decided to employ a Nanny and are not quite sure where to begin?
Firstly, we can help you through every step of the process, so don't worry, it's not as complicated as it sounds. We have been introducing Nannies to Families since 1997, so we know what we are doing.
Once you have made the decision to employ a Nanny, you should contact us Here
initially so we can get you started, but below are some things you will need to do, and some you will need to be aware of.
Start the process as soon as you know you want to employ a Nanny
This is very important as it can take a while to find your Nanny. The average is 4 weeks, but it really depends on what you have to offer
, and who we have looking for work at the time. While we do have nannies waiting for your call, the meeting/screening/yes this is the right one process can take a while in some cases
What do we mean by ‘what you have to offer’?
You will need to think about the following so we can find you a Nanny:
- What days and hours you require your Nanny for. If your days are flexible please let us know as many nannies fit part time positions together
- How much you are prepared to pay (We can let you know the average for your area)
- Do you want them to perform Housework duties, for which you may have to pay more
- Do they need a car or are you providing one for them (If you are providing a car, make sure you have included it in your written agreement, insurance, who pays the excess in case of an accident)
- What are their responsibilities going to be?
- Are you offering a live-in position, and if so, what are the rules when the Nanny isn't working?
In short, it comes down to what you are offering vs what you want!
What are you looking for in a Nanny?
Do you want someone older, younger, experienced, qualified? Do you have twins and do you need a nanny with experience in multiples?
Essentially what kind of person are you looking for?
Each Nanny is different in age, ability and experience.
While all of our Nannies have been reference checked and interviewed; we do the hard work for you, but that doesn’t mean they are right for you. Our job is to match one of our Nannies to your Family, however ultimately you will have the final say on whom you want providing care for your child, so make it an informed choice.
What questions will you need to ask them at the interview process?
You will have to interview the candidates. So what questions will you want to ask them?
Make a list of the things that are important to you and your Family and write down their answers so you can refer back to it afterwards. We have a sample list for you to use Here
, but keep in mind that it’s a sample only and may not cover all that you want to ask or be relevant to your situation. Our Nannies are asked to bring a copy of their CV to leave with you.
Our Fees…how much will using Home Grown Kids Nanny Agency cost?
In most cases, there will be no fee charged to you if we find you a Nanny and you join our Education Programme
, however if your youngest child is age 2 years+, there may be a placement fee for finding a nanny; we will contact you to discuss this. A home safety check will be completed on the home to meet our requirements and you will need to complete a timesheet each fortnight confirming your nanny's hours through HomeZone
, our online timesheeting system - it's as simple as that.
If you live outside our coverage area, or choose not to join our programme (it’s free to join), or you don’t have a pre-school aged child, then there will be a fee. This will be fully explained to you before we start assisting you, and explained in writing as well so you know exactly what your responsibilities are.
What are my legal responsibilities?
Legally if you are employing a Nanny you will become an Employer and will need to do the following:
- Provide an agreement to your Nanny (this protects you and them should a dispute arise, we can assist you with this)
- Make allowances for Holiday pay, ACC, Kiwisaver, and Tax
If we are doing the wages for you, we can take care of all this. See our page on our Payroll options Here.
Remember, we can provide you with an estimate, advice on how to employ a Nanny, and answer all your questions.
