Fish Tanks

Why have a page titled Fish Tanks?
Well we think you will look at it, and here you are!

Ok, that's not the reason. The main reason is that during the Christchurch Quakes, a lot of fish tanks were shaken off their stands where we all thought they were safe and wouldn't move under any reason and ended up broken on the floor, as you can see.

This has caused us no end of problems. Before Christchurch, we felt there was no need to make these secure. Afterwards, it's a different story.

So, here is how you can make these safer, and don't say it's never going to happen to my fish tank...

How to Secure Your Aquarium For an Earthquake:

Secure your aquarium cabinet or table to the wall.

  • Locate wall studs behind cabinet/table using stud finder and mark with a pencil.
  • Attach furniture straps to marked wall studs using drill or screw-driver.
  • Clean the surface of the fish tank where you plan to affix the Velcro with alcohol wipes and let air dry.
  • Attach furniture straps to cabinet/table with at least an inch and a half of give to allow for shaking.
  • Attach a second strap for even weight distribution.

Secure your fish tank to the wall.

  • Use your stud finder to find the wall studs that you plan to attach your earthquake straps.  Mark their location with a pencil.
  • Drill a 5/32” pilot hole through wallboard and into a stud at least 2” deep.  Position so the strap lines up from wall stud to refrigerator.
  • Place chosen grommet over drilled hole, leaving a bit of slack.
  • Place washer on screw then insert screw through hole in and into pilot hole.  Tighten screw into wall stud until washer and screw are flush against wall.
  • Clean the surface of the fish tank where you plan to affix the Velcro with alcohol wipes and let air dry.
  • Attach straps to fish tank with at least an inch and a half of give to allow for shaking.
  • Use two straps at either edge for even weight distribution
